(Guest Post) Visioning – How to Redefine, Redesign and Re-love Your Life by Rita May – Founder and Author of ritamayblog.com

The way to success involves three steps: visioning, setting goals and following through with actions. Here I’m going to talk about the first step: visioning. To be able to create your vision for your life, you need to identify your core values, passions and your life purpose/mission. Let’s find out how.

The competition of two young boys

Have you heard the story of the two young boys who had a little competition on a large field? They wanted to see who can get across the field with fewer steps, i.e. on the shortest path.

The first boy started to walk. He looked down at his feet, occasionally looked up and from time to time he even looked back to see how far he had come. In the meantime they counted his steps. He zigzagged across the field and arrived at the other side after 120 steps.

It was the other boy’s turn. Before he started to walk, he chose a bush at the other end of the field and kept his eyes on it. He walked across the field, all the while he fixed his eyes on the bush. When he arrived at the other side of the field they counted 90 steps.

The lesson here is simple:

The boy who glued his eyes to his destination reached it quicker than the boy who looked at his feet, looked back and only occasionally looked straight ahead at his destination.

Know your destination

This little story teaches us that if we want to be successful and reach our goals quickly, we need to know where we are heading. And the biggest mistake we make is getting so immersed in our day to day activities and to-do list that we forget or don’t even know where we are heading.

The consequences of this are the following:

1.A life led by chance and randomness.

2. A life that is more about what other people wanted for us rather what we want for ourselves.

3. And a feeling that something is missing from our life, a sense of disconnect.

In this post I’d like you to show a possibility to redefine, redesign and re-love your life.

You see, the most successful people in the world are people who create and fulfil their own vision for their lives.

They are the ones that have defined the meaning of their lives and are living on purpose. I’d like to share with you some ideas on how you can create a more fulfilling life – a life by design rather than a life by default.

“You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you want.” – Margaret Young

Do you know who you really are?

Identify your core values

To be able to live a more fulfilling life, you need to know who you really are today. From there you can assess more easily where you want to be in the future.

Values stem from our beliefs and convictions, which then guide our behaviours. They are the essence of who we are, the foundation of our unique self-expression.

Values help us act with integrity, and when our life priorities are aligned with our values, we are well on our way to experiencing fulfillment in our lives.

However, when your life isn’t in alignment with your core values, there is a huge conflict between who you are on the inside and the life you are living on the outside.

This conflict can cause many problems, such as procrastination, it sucks the energy and motivation out of you, stops you achieving your goals and dreams or simply makes you unhappy.

You probably know someone who is very successful in her/his career but they are unhappy because they didn’t realise that their core value is their family and due to their job they have to spend a lot of time away from their loved ones.

Or others have a wonderful family life but they feel unfulfilled because they either don’t have a job, or they have an uninspiring job that they don’t like or a boss who doesn’t treat them well.

We derive a great deal of personal fulfilment when we live out our values. Find out your core values by taking a few minutes to perform the following 4 exercises described in this Guide.

What are your passions?

Your passions are the things you love doing.

This next step is to make a list of your passions, the activities that give you the most reward, pleasure and happiness in your life. Your passions interest and inspire you. These are the things that you would do even if you weren’t paid for it.

For example someone may have the following professional passions:

• Teaching
• Learning
• Creativity

Her personal passions might be:

• Health
• Fitness
• Travel

Combined with your core values, your passions show you what kind of job you are best suited for and what would make you the happiest. For example for the person above teaching health and fitness would be a good fit.

Now that you know your passions, it will be easy to discover your life purpose, your mission.

What is your life purpose?

Your purpose is your reason for living.

Everyone is born with a special talent or skill that they are really good at and love doing. We just need to find it inside of us. It might be easier to discover for some (musicians, writers, painters, mathematicians), while other talents and skills are not so easy to identify, like helping people, being a good mother, providing for the family.

“The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.” – Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Do you know your life purpose?

I give you three exercises to discover the purpose of your life in this Guide here:

If you want to know the 3 most common things that keep people from fulfilling their purpose, check out this blog post, where I also show you solutions how to overcome these barriers.

3 things keeping you from fulfilling your purpose

Where do you want to be in the future – visioning

Now that you know your values, passion and life purpose and you understand who you really are, the next step is to figure out where you want to be in the future, what is your vision. While our purpose is the meaning of our life, our vision is the fulfilment of that purpose.

“If you can tune into your purpose and really align with it, setting goals so that your vision is an expression of that purpose, then life flows much more easily.” ―Jack Canfield

For your visioning exercise imagine and write down your ideal life in 5, 10, 20… years. Don’t hold yourself back, stretch your imagination, dream big. Create a vision for your professional and personal life as well.

Concentrate on what you want, not on what others expect from you.

Imagine all the details: where you live, what you do, what kind of relationships you have, how you look, etc.

I have a detailed description of how to write your life vision here. Writing a Life Vision is a fun and powerful exercise that will dramatically change your life in a positive way.

A more visual way of visioning is creating a Vision Board. You have probably already heard of this and may have already seen a Vision Board. I had so much fun creating mine. You can check it out here.

Once you have created your life vision, it’s important to go back and check whether it is in alignment with your core values.

Do you remember the person who is so successful professionally but miserable because they can’t spend time with their family? You don’t want that to happen to you. Your vision needs to be in alignment with your core values.

I hope you had fun figuring out who you really are and where you want to be in the future by creating your life vision.

There will be probably many steps leading to that dream life.

The next step is to break your vision down, list the steps, i.e. your goals that will get you there. But it’s another story. I have a whole series of blog posts about goal setting and achieving, you might want to read them too.
